11/5/2019 (Permalink)
We often use fireplaces during the winter months; however, did you know that there are steps you should take before creating your first fire? Take it from us here at SERVPRO; we have seen too many homes destroyed by not properly preparing your fireplace before the first use of the season. And as much as we love to meet new people, we would rather meet you on happier terms. So, take our advice and follow these steps to keep you, your family, and your home safe this season.
Traditional Fireplace
- Clean out the firebox (the pit) from any items left over from last season
- One the box is cleaned out, check for cracked bricks or damage to the structure
- Inspect the flue and damper
- You want to make sure everything is clear and can open
- Clean your chimney
- Hire a professional to sweep the chimney at least once a year
- Inspect your chimney
Gas Fireplace
- Inspect your fireplace every year
- Check the glass plate, make sure there are no cracks
- Turn off the gas at the main valve
- Test the pilot light and igniter
- Check any outside vents
- If there are black marks, it’s time to clean the ceramic logs
