NM Monsoon Season

8/2/2024 (Permalink)

Monsoon season is here, and we have learned anything from this year, is to expect the unexpected. Don’t you agree? Now some monsoon seasons have been kind to us, while for those of us who have lived here longer, we have seen what they can do when they come in with a vengeance. A motto to live by is one from Benjamin Franklin, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” So, let us get a plan in place just in case the rain decides to come inside this year.

  • If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, by some sandbags and keep them around, if storms are predicted, then set them up outside the doors to try and prevent the water from coming inside.
  • Place towels on the inside of the window seals.
  • Have a few extra buckets, large pots, or bowls around in case there is a leak from the roof.

What happens if water gets in the house? There are several steps you can take to help prevent extensive damage to your personal items. However, there are also things you need to be aware of to keep you and your family safe.

  • If the water is minimal, get towels to wipe up areas or use a mop.
  • Remove any books, magazines, or other colored items from wet carpet to prevent staining.
  • If there is standing water, do not enter the room where electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Contact your insurance company so they can help assess the damage and to see if they will cover any damage caused by the water.
  • Contact your local restoration company to help dry out your home and restore it to the way it was before the damage

Most importantly, be aware of the affected areas, and if the water looks dirty or has mud or other debris, completely avoid entering that area.

Lightning Strike Leads to Residential Fire - OH NO!

Fire Extinguisher Warning Sign Be Prepared!

Lightning Strike Leads to Residential Fire - OH NO! It does happen and we want you to be prepared and be safe.

Know when a fire extinguisher is needed from the tips below:

Generally, if you’ve used one fire extinguisher, you’ll use them all, as they typically follow the same usage procedure known as PASS:

  • Pull the pin to break the tamper seal
  • Aim the nozzle at the bottom of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle and release extinguisher chemicals
  • Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire until it’s extinguished

By now, fire extinguishers have become staples in most disaster-ready homes and businesses and provide billions worldwide with a quick, straightforward way to respond to sudden blazes.

Knowing the steps below, can save you a ton of hassle with instances like the average kitchen fire but to really mitigate as much fire damage as possible, there are a few other things you need to take into account.

1. Choosing Your Extinguisher

The first thing you should always be aware of is that not every fire extinguisher is good for every job. For example, when dealing with a grease fire, you’ll need a class B extinguisher to really get the job done safely. It’s a good idea to research different extinguisher uses before deciding where to allocate these appliances around your home.

2. Emergency Services

Just because you have an extinguisher on your side doesn’t mean you won’t need emergency services. Ideally, you should have someone calling 911 as you attempt to extinguish the flames. This ensures you’re able to get the assistance you need in the event that your attempts are unsuccessful.

3. Be Smart

Lastly, know when to leave the house. If the blaze becomes too large or your extinguisher runs out of juice, it’s time to get outdoors. You can pass over the firefighting responsibilities to emergency responders and work with a fire cleanup crew such as SERVPRO of Rio Rancho/Sandoval County & SERVPRO of South Albuquerque afterward to get your home back to normal again.

Damage to the drywall on the ceiling due to a storm Damaged Ceiling

Every water damage event is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.

When are team first arrived to the home, we do a full inspection of the damage. If the home was built before 1980 an asbestos testing will be necessary and the inspector will check for microbial growth. Air movers and dehumidifiers will then be placed in the affected area for drying out for as long as necessary. We will remove any materials that are non salvable.

Our team will then maintain records on moisture levels throughout the process and keep you updated every step of the way.

If Mold is present it has the potential to cause health effects and can spread through your property in as little as 48 hours.

Don't let your roof pond

10/27/2021 (Permalink)

top photo shows ponding on a roof - Bottom shows wet dry wall Ponds are gorgeous just not on your roof!

Flat roofs notoriously love to leak due to inadequate drainage, and this only becomes more apparent as your roof gets older. Heat, wind, or storms may have caused irreversible damage to the original seams and screws, widening the path to further deterioration and leakage.

Flat roofs may develop a problem called ponding that doesn’t occur on sloped roofs. Ponding is when water collects in puddles on the roof instead of draining off in a timely manner. Homeowners may think this small amount of water is harmless, but ponding tends to get worse over time and can have a negative impact on the roof and your whole home.

Even a little pond can leave a lot of damage. As you can see in the photo attached - The top photos displays the small ponding area and the bottom shows the drywall damage that was impacted by the leak.

Call us right away if you experience this issue - We have a team that can help and referrals that are available that can help fix the leak so it never happens again.

Summer Lightning Storms

Lightning Storm

Here in New Mexico, we have to keep a close eye on the weather, as we are all too familiar with how quickly things can change. So now that monsoon season has really started (the actual start date is June 15, but nothing really happened then), we need to be aware of what is happening outside. We celebrate the rain when it comes, and it is a sign of relief for our drought-stricken state. For several of us, we like to sit outside and watch the rain as it comes down. Just give me a cup of coffee and let me sit in peace, so needless to say, but I will anyway, all the rain we got over the weekend set the stage for peaceful moments.

Something else I love about summer is watching the lightning storms over the city—some of my favorite local photographers capture pictures of lightning that leave me speechless. However, as beautiful the lightning is, there is also a danger. Lightning can travel from miles away to find its target. This year some of the concerns are an increase in lightning strikes while people are out hiking. This is more of a concern this year as more people are taking advantage of all the wonders that New Mexico offers since there are still so many restrictions everywhere else. Lightning can also start fires and cause other damage to structures.

Here are a few tips to follow during a lightning storm.

If you’re caught outside during a storm:

  • Try to find shelter
  • Get as low as possible, but do not lie down
  • Stay off your cell phone
  • Get out of your tent
  • Toss away any metal objects
  • If you’re with a group, separate from each other

If you’re inside during a storm:

  • Stay inside
  • Stay off corded phones (I know these aren’t really around, but there are still some)
  • Stay off other corded electronics or electrical equipment
  • Stay away from windows and doors
  • Do not lie on concrete floors or against concrete walls

Stay safe, New Mexico, and be aware of your surroundings.

Until next time,

Natural Disasters

7/21/2020 (Permalink)

New Mexico's Risk Factor

When most states talk about natural disasters they are referring to earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Well, we definitely do not have hurricanes, as for the other to we are pretty lucky in New Mexico with our minimum risk factor. On average New Mexico has about 10 tornadoes a year. As for earthquakes, the largest earthquake hit Socorro in 1906. Although we still experience minor quakes in parts of the state, none of which cause too much damage. So if we do not have major disasters, what do we have.

In New Mexico our “natural disasters” include:

  • Hail Storms
  • Wildfires
  • Monsoons
  • Lightning Storms
  • Wind Storms
  • Ice Storms
  • Snow Storms

Each one of these happens sporadically throughout the state, and each year the experience and threat level is different. While in the last two years, with the monsoon seasons we saw significant rainfall, but this year has started off pretty minimal. Our marketing rep, Brandy, was recently talking about the snowstorm that hit at the end of 2006 and carried through the start of 2007. It was the most she was forced home from work, that was before this pandemic, of course, those were for different reasons.

In the restoration industry, we look at all of these situations just a little differently than most. For us, those things create busy seasons for us. We are there for those who are affected by a disaster, each and every time. In the SERVPRO® family we have what we call Extreme Teams. These teams really fight the aftermath of major storms. Typically chasing tornadoes and hurricanes to help people get back to a certain level of normalcy. And even though we do not experience those extreme storms, we are part of the SERVPRO® family, so we can call on them when we need it.

Summer Hail Storms

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

Hail Damage to a Roof

The last thing you want to think about during the summer are hailstorms, but that’s what happens around New Mexico. Now, I think we all have our game faces on, due to the amount of unexpected everything this year, so we just want to make sure you are prepared when the storms come.

Hailstorms are much like windstorms in the damage that they cause to roofs. The larger the hail, the more risk to your home. Not only does it damage the house, but it wreaks havoc to your plants and your vehicles. To protect your cars, there are coverings you can purchase. We’ve also see cardboard placed over windshields to at least protect the glass from breaking. Unfortunately, there is not a cover large enough or simple enough to throw over your home to protect it. However, we should remind you, do not go outside during a hail storm to protect your property; the last thing we all want is for you to get hurt. Watch the weather and prepare the best you can. Property can be replaced; however, you cannot be replaced.

Windstorms

7/18/2020 (Permalink)

Windstorm

Being surrounded by mountains mean that we can often experience some extreme windstorms that feel like they come out of nowhere. On Monday, it felt like we had of those storms in Albuquerque. Now it is not like we are in Texas or Oklahoma, places that experience tornadoes, but windstorms can still cause damage to our communities. We have all seen the tumbleweeds racing across the freeways during extreme windstorms. It makes you feel like you are in an old western.

Windstorms in New Mexico have more chances of causing damages to homes. Typical damages include, but are not limited to, roof damage, which could lead to future water leaks in the house, and numerous other issues. If water leaks go undetected for a while, it could lead to a mold issue. Strong winds could even uproot trees. Uprooted trees could fall onto the home, which could cause a lot more than roof damage; there could also be structural damage. It is always good to clean inspects on your roofs up to date to know what your risk level is during a windstorm.

Storms Season is Coming Albuquerque!

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

Storm damage can cause major damage to homes and business’

If a storm is coming, you should always be prepared. Although violent storms can strike anytime, the spring and summer months typically mark an increase in the threat of sudden, severe storms that sometimes include wind, rain, lighting and even hail.

Authorities issue a storm 'watch' when the potential for severe weather exists. A storm 'warning' will be issued when danger from a severe storm is imminent. The following tips will help prepare you to better protect yourself and your property when a storm is on the horizon.

  • Put a communication plan in place and prepare an emergency supply kit, including a battery-powered NOAA weather radio.
  • Postpone outdoor activities; secure outdoor objects that could become airborne.
  • Don't use corded phones or any appliances that are "plugged in." Use cell or cordless phones instead.
  • Seek shelter in a home, building or hard top automobile. The steel frame of a vehicle (not the rubber ties) can help protect you from a lightning strike if you avoid touching metal or other conductive surfaces.
  • Avoid windows and doors, don't rely on concrete walls, and stay off of porches.
  • If you are outside when a storm hits, quickly seek shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid small, isolated structures in open areas and steer clear of hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.

After A Storm

  • Avoid storm-damaged areas. Stay away from downed power lines and never try to drive through a flooded roadway.
  • Replenish your emergency supplies and repair property damage promptly, before the next storm strikes.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”®

Hail And Escalating Roof Damage

3/21/2019 (Permalink)

Roof damage can be a significant cost for homeowners and businesses.

Roof damage can be a significant cost for Albuquerque homeowners and businesses and one that can be avoided with vigilant and routine inspections. While many people are likely aware of the potential for damage after a storm, they may not be as aware of the threat a hail storm poses to their roof. Hail comes in a variety of sizes and weights, and these ice balls can do lasting damage to your roof if not mitigated early.

1. Shingles

The most apparent signs of hail damage to your roof are broken or missing shingles. Hail stones can either create small divots in a shingle, or they can completely fracture and even break a shingle free of the roof altogether.

2. Underlayment

While missing shingles are not significant causes of roof damage, torn or missing underlayment can be. When a shingle is broken or missing, it can lead to the exposure or wearing away of the underlayment. Tattered or damaged underlayment can lead to water damaged sheathing.

3. Sheathing

Sheathing is the wood boards that cover over your attic joist. These boards are your last line of defense against the outside. If your shingles and underlayment are damaged, then your sheathing is exposed to rain and other elements. Depending on the size of hail, it can severely damage your sheathing through both impact and melting.

4. Insulation and Attic

When the roof barrier is compromised, it leaves insulation and your attic space potential exposed. This exposure can lead to moisture buildup and possibly mold development. If you are experiencing this level of damage, you may want to call a disaster restoration specialist in the area.

Hail storms can cause significant roof damage. Routine inspections of your property’s roofline should protect you from any obvious issues like missing shingles. However, you may want to seek assistance for more thorough inspections for underlayment and sheathing damage.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”®

Are Storm Damage and Flooding the Same?

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

We have the best technicians and equipment to remove water from your business in case a flood happens.

Torrential rain, golf ball sized hail and high winds invade your business in Albuquerque.

These events cause water damage inside your property. There is flooding on the ground floor, so is this considered flood damage? Or is it storm damage because the storm caused the flooding? You are not alone if you find this confusing. Read below to understand the difference between the two.

Flood Damage

To an insurance company, there is a clear-cut difference between water damage caused by a flood, and water damage caused by a storm. If you have flood insurance for your property, the following indicate that it will likely cover the damage:

  • Your business and at least one other property (or two or more acres) are normally dry but are suddenly and temporarily flooded.
  • A natural source causes the flood waters, such as a hurricane storm surge or mud-flow. Any other sudden accumulation of water rising up into your commercial property is considered a flood, including heavy rainfall that saturates and seeps up from the ground into homes or businesses.

Storm Damage

Storms cause a myriad of problems, not limited to water and wind damage. The following are common types of commercial problems caused by a storm:

  • Heavy winds, rain or hail may crack or stress the windows, foundation or roofing material, leading to water getting in. When the water damage is caused by falling rain that does not rise up from the ground into your property, it is considered caused by the storm even if the result is flood water inside your business.
  • The damage from winds, rain or other event only impact your business, not necessarily the surrounding areas.

Whether storm damage or flood damage ravages your commercial property in Albuquerque, storm and water restoration specialists are your first line of defense. Depending on the cause of damage and your specific policy, your commercial insurance may or may not provide coverage.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

How Light Rain Leads to Flood Damage in Albuquerque

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

Storm water Damage Often Results from Runoff

Various Factors in Albuquerque Can Lead to Flooding after a Storm—SERVPRO Has the Solutions

Contrary to popular belief, colossal rainfall does not need to occur for homes in Albuquerque to face the prospect of flood damage. Rain in any amount can lead to flooding as soil saturation, sewer overflow, terrain abnormalities, and other factors allow a relatively small amount of water to snowball into a much bigger problem. SERVPRO prepares after every major storm to respond to widespread flooding in the area, but we also maintain readiness year-round to make sure we can help whenever and wherever disasters happen in the local area.

Soil Saturation
A major contributing factor to many cases of flood damage in Albuquerque is the amount of water in the soil before rainfall. While water use restrictions have helped to reduce average soil saturation in recent years, the area can remain wet for extended periods of time for a variety of reasons. In some situations, even a relatively mild bout of rain may not be able to find any space in the soil and can directly convert to a flowing sheet of floodwater. Water percolation to eventually reach the aquifer may be too slow to avoid flooding.

Road and Drainage System Damage
Drainage systems along roadways are essential in cities worldwide because all types of pavement can absorb little to no water before developing flood-like conditions. When roadways become damaged or undergo heavy maintenance, their drainage systems may sometimes be temporarily compromised, creating isolated problems when the weather turns out unfavorable. These cases are rare but can happen almost anywhere along a paved street.

Open Windows and Doors
Leaving a window open during a storm can subject the immediate room or area to enough water to soak materials and cause long-term damage without proper attention. In these situations, SERVPRO technicians make sure not to over-extend their operations and keep a low profile to prevent a relatively minor flood incident from becoming a major inconvenience.

Don't Let Last Night's Storm Damage Keep You Up at Night

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

The professionals at SERVPRO can get things repaired quickly.

Is Your Albuquerque Home's Storm Damage Keeping You Up at Night?

When you have spent the night lulled into a restful sleep by the rain on your roof and windows only to wake up to a ceiling dripping water on your bed, you know you have storm damage. The professionals at SERVPRO can get things repaired quickly.

Only a few aspects of a house are designed to be only decorative. The roof may have design elements that seem to be only for looks, but the majority of every roof is for protection from all types of weather. Heat from the sun, cold from winter weather, snow, rain, and even insects, birds, and wild animals are kept out by your roof. When the roof is damaged, anything can get into your attic, and this can affect the rest of your home.

Albuquerque receives its fair share of all types of weather, including the occasional storm which can be powerful enough to damage even the best-constructed roof around. When the roof is damaged, it will not take long for things to become increasingly worse as time passes. SERVPRO knows that there is more than just the initial damage to the roof after a storm causes damage to it that matters. Water can enter the attic and end up as far down as the basement, damaging every area of your home in a very short period.

Rainwater and snow that soon melts, wetting down your stored belongings, isn't the only problem. That same water can render your attic's insulation worthless. Many times, insulation can be re-used when you have repair work done, but this is not true if the insulation has been compressed or otherwise damaged. When water infiltrates insulation, it weighs it down and compression results. Other problems include rust developing on metal ducts, warping of the floor boards in the attic, and peeling wallpaper and disintegrating plaster, especially on exterior walls.

SERVPRO professionals will make sure that all possible efforts are made to prevent additional damage like that from happening. After making an assessment of the damage, we will cover your roof with an adequately sized tarp. After roofing repairs are finished, we can begin working on restoring the damaged areas and restoring your home. There is a multitude of issues that can arise when you have a damaged roof. We use different types of equipment to not only dry and clean the interior of your home, but to also measure our progress as we work. When we finish, you will be surprised to find that it is “Like it never even happened.”

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

Albuquerque Storm Damage Tips

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

General Tips To Prepare for Storm Damage

  • Assemble an emergency kit that consists of food, water and basic disaster supplies designed to last at least 72 hours. Put the kit together well before severe weather strikes. Keep it in an easily accessible place, so you can grab it and go if you have to evacuate.
  • Develop a family communication plan, since your family members will probably be at different places like work or school when a storm strikes. Therefore, you need to establish a way of getting in touch with each other before the storm strikes. Decide ahead of time how and where you will meet each other. Make sure everybody in the family knows everybody else's cell phone number.
  • If you live in a storm-prone area, your community may have already established evacuation routes to leave the area safely and quickly. Learn about your community's evacuation plans and routes and make sure everybody in your family knows.

Tips for Choosing a Flood Damage Restoration Company in Albuquerque and Santa Fe

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Going through a flood after a storm is stressful enough but choosing a contractor to repair the resulting damage can be even more challenging.

SERVPRO Provides Expert Flood Damage Restoration for Your Property

Going through a flood after a storm is stressful enough but choosing a contractor to repair the resulting damage can be even more challenging. Your home may be the biggest investments that you'll ever make, protecting it by selecting a knowledgeable professional for the job is essential. The right expert will make the restoration process after flood damage as smooth and easy as possible, while a less knowledgeable contractor can make the problem even worse.

If you're dealing with flood damage in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, no doubt you've seen the vast number of companies and services available in the area. Here are three important suggestions that will help you hire a skilled contractor to take care of your home's flood damage restoration.

1. Unless you plan to pay the entire bill to repair your home's flood damage, it's a good idea to hire a company like SERVPRO that has experience dealing with insurance policies. We know how to work with insurance companies, lessen your claims paperwork and stress, and help mitigate your costs.

2. Hire an actual water damage restoration contractor, not a cleaning service. A cleaning service will be cheaper and may help your home look and smell better after it has been damaged, but they won't make any repairs. When you opt to work with a flood damage restoration company like SERVPRO, we'll prevent further problems with your home's structure, extract water, and harmful particulates, and ensure that your house is safe to occupy. After a heavy water-logging, this will also deter mold growth.

3. Flood damage companies who have a good reputation in the local area won't mind providing references. A trustworthy company such as ours can provide licensing and technicians that are IICRC certified, and able to successfully assess and restore your home.

At SERVPRO of South Albuquerque, we're always glad to answer questions and show just what makes our team of professionals qualified to handle flood damage, fire damage, mold remediation and other emergencies. If your home needs help, call us 24/7 at (505) 345-4700.

Common FAQs about Restoring Storm Damage in Albuquerque Homes

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

Flood damage can be particularly devastating. Call SERVPRO after you have made it to safety.

Knowing the Steps that will be Followed During the Remediation Process Can Help You with Expectations

If you are dealing with the horrible aftermath of flooding, caused by heavy weather or storms, the last thing that you will want is to have to worry about repairs. You need a restoration company that is tactful, sensitive, and willing to get the job done quickly, while also keeping you in the loop when needed.

This is what the experts at SERVPRO can offer you. We have many years of experience dealing with storm damage in Albuquerque homes and we can get repairs started fast. You can be as involved as you like. Our technicians will keep you informed, but if you are busy handling insurance claims and filing papers, they can also work reliably and independently.

To give you an idea of what to expect from the SERVPRO restoration team, here are some common questions from homeowners.

How Is the Water Removed From My House?

We have access to industrial sized pumping devices. They can be used to extract large amounts of water from flooded areas so that it can be disposed of safely. As repairs can only begin once the affected area is free of standing water, this process is essential. Our pumps come in all shapes and sizes, which means that even awkward areas like crawlspaces can be emptied and prepped for restoration.

Why Do You Need to Lift My Carpet?

This is called ‘floating’ the carpet. The SERVPRO technicians gently lift the material up by a small amount, so that they can slot a blower underneath. It circulates clean, dry air and helps the carpet to dry faster. Crucially, it also dries out any subflooring that is underneath the main carpet. If this isn’t done and the subflooring remains damp, the moisture will only reappear and cause further damage.

What Type of Dehumidifier Will You Use?

There are actually four different types of dehumidifier and they are all suited to particular types of jobs. For instance, desiccant varieties are highly effective in cold climates, but they don’t work as well around high temperatures. For this reason, they are better used in mostly uninhabited areas like crawlspaces and basements. The type of machine that we use will depend entirely on what materials are being dried and their current condition. The final decision can be made after a thorough inspection.

Do You Monitor the Drying Process?

Yes, the dehumidifiers and other drying machines will be checked on a regular basis, if it does turn out that they need to be left operational for some time. Often, the technicians have to wait for the affected space to be entirely dry before they can start cleaning and repairs. It may be that they leave you for several evenings, with instructions about how to work around the blowers and dryers while they are not onsite.

These are just some of the basics of storm and water damage restoration. There is lots more to learn if you want additional information. SERVPRO of South Albuquerque is based in your local area. We respond to requests for emergency restoration as soon as we receive them. Call us 24/7 at (505) 347-4700

Storm Damage in Albuquerque and Santa Fe

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Thunderstorms, torrential downpours, flash floods and tornadoes wreak havoc across the Albuquerque area

Thunderstorms, torrential downpours, flash floods and tornadoes wreak havoc across the Albuquerque area.

While you can’t prevent all storm damage in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, you can proactively protect your property in the event of a significant storm. If not properly and promptly repaired, wind and water damage can cause further structural damage, and mold infestations. If your home is affected by floods or is damaged by the wind, trust your local SERVPRO to clean up the damage, and restore it to its original state.

Here are 4 things you can do well in advance of a storm to protect your property and keepsakes against water and flood damage.

  1. Visually Inspect Your Roof.  Every 3-4 months, walk around your home and look for any damaged roof tiles or the flashing around chimneys, vents, and at roof joints. If you notice any curling edges or cracks, or if you notice any leaks in the home, call a licensed roofing company immediately. Don’t wait until storm season; do it as soon as possible to prevent water damage to your home.
  2. Clean Your Gutters. Gutters that are filled with leaves, pine needles, or other debris can cause storm water to flow into your home, and around your foundation. This can lead to significant flood damage in your home. Even if you have shields on your gutters, it is wise to check them prior to storm season to make sure they are performing optimally and draining the water away from your house. It may be wise to consider downspout extenders to help move rainwater effectively from around your home.
  3. Ensure Landscaping Encourages Proper Drainage. To keep your home dry, it is imperative that water drains away from the foundation. Often, water will seep through the foundation, causing damp and musty basements, which can be a harbinger for mold growth requiring mold remediation in your home. With heavy rain, water can fill window wells quickly, leading to a flooded basement. Check window well covers often to make sure they are free from cracks and splits. For foliage around the home, consider raised beds or containers so the excess water is directed to lower areas of your property.
  4. Prepare for The Worst. In the event that National Weather Service or local weather professionals issue a warning for severe weather, prepare immediately. Your preparation should include a quick visual inspection of the exterior of your home, including roof, windows, window wells, and other features. If you have a sump pump, set it up, and have it at the ready in the event flooding occurs. Indoors, make sure that you have food and water for 3 days in the event disaster strikes.

Water damage in your home whether due to a storm, a leaky roof, a broken water heater, or a sewage backup, can cause significant structural damage, and damage to precious personal items. Your local SERVPRO has the expertise and the tools necessary for storm damage restoration.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier, and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

What Can Happen During Storm Damage In Albuquerque and Santa Fe

6/30/2017 (Permalink)

Storm damage team is ready for any size disaster.

Storm Damage Gets Help from SERVPRO

Storms are violent, unpredictable phenomena. When a storm begins, even the most experienced of meteorologists with the best computers can't say for sure what will happen. As such, you should be prepared for the worst of a storm whenever one begins to form. Although some types of storm damage are more prevalent in specific regions of the country, the unlikeliest disasters are often the most damaging as people are not prepared for them. These types of damage can happen during a variety of storms, and you should be extremely cautious around them.

Lightning

Lightning strikes just about everywhere on Earth, and can cause significant bodily or structural harm where it hits. Victims of lightning storm damage in Albuquerque and Santa Fe are often seriously injured or even killed if directly hit, and their homes may easily catch fire if struck. Installing a quality lightning rod or two on your home is sure to provide protection against some strikes, but you should remain aware that lightning remains a leading cause of house fires in the United States.

Flooding

Floods often accompany storms with heavy rains, as they cause rivers and water fixtures to overflow and lead a torrent of water into a home. Flooding may also occur if your home has an open window or broken window well or leak near a basement, where water will collect and pool up into a minor or major flood. Flood waters are contaminated and dangerous to residents, so you should always let an experienced company like SERVPRO deal with them.

Wind and Kinetic Damage

Heavy winds during storms, especially hurricanes and tornadoes, often can severely damage a structure directly. Roofing and siding can be torn off, and objects may be blown into the side of the home. Should a tree or telephone pole fall on the house, it may cause extensive damage and require tarps. If an electrical pole or wire falls on a house, this may also cause fires. We can provide a tarp service to mitigate the intrusion of rainwater and to keep out vandals and vermin.

Water Damage

Small amounts of water damage are often caused by storms, and by unfortunate mistakes on the part of homeowners. Securing doors and closing windows are essential for keeping water out and your interior dry. Water damage can also lead to mold growth, which is costly to remove and may cause health effects.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier, and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Damage in Albuquerque and Santa Fe Happens Year-Round

Storms can cause major damage in Albuquerque and Santa Fe

Make Storm Damage Cleanup Easy With SERVPRO

Storms can happen in any season, and can bring with them not only heavy rainfall but also hail and high winds. These elements of nature can be very damaging to a home's exterior. The damage can be so extensive that the interior of the home becomes damaged, as well.

Winds and Rains Brought by the Storms Can Create Damaging Effects

High winds, particularly those with even faster and stronger gusts, can rip off siding from your home's exterior walls and tear off shingles from the roof. This stripping away of your home's protective layers can create openings for rainwater to enter. Debris from the storm can also be carried into these openings. In Albuquerque and Santa Fe, storm damage often involves trees downed from the high winds. This added weight, which is often sudden, is typically too heavy for a home's roof to bear, and causes it to collapse inwards.

Breaking glass found in windows and sliding glass doors is often not able to withstand flying debris when a home is situated on a wooded lot or area. What was once a cozy spot for you and your home is now a pile of downed tree limbs and wreckage. Because of the high possibility of power lines being nearby, cleaning up storm damage is not recommended except by trained and experienced professionals. At SERVPRO, we have the training and the experience to quickly and professionally bring your home and property back into a safe state of being.

Skilled Removal of Debris and Clean Up of Damaged Areas of Your Home

We have the equipment to cover all aspects of storm damage, from the removal of brush, tree limbs, and ripped away shingles and siding, to mold prevention through water removal and desiccation of your carpets and upholstered furniture, to repairing damaged structures and aspects of your home. We put our training, education, and experience to work for you as a team, using the latest in technology and techniques, ensuring that your home will return to its previous welcoming state quickly.

When Storm Damage Destroys A Roof, Albuquerque and Santa Fe Residents Must Repair Quickly To Protect Their Home

6/9/2017 (Permalink)

When the roof is damaged, it will not take long for things to become increasingly worse as time passes.

Repairing A Roof After Storm Damage

Only a few aspects of a house are designed to be only decorative. The roof may have design elements that seem to be only for looks, but every roof is for protection from all types of weather. Heat from the sun, cold from winter weather, snow, rain, and even insects, birds, and wild animals are kept out by your roof. When the roof is damaged, anything can get into your attic, and this can affect the rest of your home. Albuquerque and Santa Fe receive their fair share of all types of weather, including the occasional storm which can be powerful enough to damage even the best-constructed roof around. After assessing the damage, we will cover your roof with an adequately sized tarp. We can then have our roofing professionals repair your roof. When roofing repairs are finished, we can begin working on restoring the damaged areas and restoring your home. There is a multitude of issues that can arise when you have a damaged roof. We use different types of equipment to not only dry and clean the interior of your home, but to also measure our progress as we work.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier, and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

You can be as involved as you like. Our technicians will keep you informed, but if you are busy handling insurance claims and filing papers, they can also work reliably and independently.

To give you an idea of what to expect from the SERVPRO restoration team, here are some common questions from homeowners.

This is called ‘floating’ the carpet. The SERVPRO technicians gently lift the material up by a small amount, so that they can slot a blower underneath.

SERVPRO Says Fast Water Removal Limits Water Damage

SERVPRO Can Restore Your Flood/Storm Damaged Commercial Property

Although commercial business owners grapple with property issues as part of doing business, dealing with flood damage can be particularly problematic. In addition to necessitating extensive structural damage repair work, flood damage can destroy inventory, stock, supplies, office furniture, documents and electronic equipment. Add to this list potential health issues arising from contaminated water intrusion and possible mold proliferation. SERVPRO suggest the following article may help mitigate water damage to your business facility.

Ramifications of Water Damage Caused by Storm Surges
In many cases, flood damage results from the effects of a storm. There are several types of water damage that can result from storm surges. Some of them include:
• Building displacement or damage
• Mold growth in commercial properties within walls or HVAC systems
• Damage to coastal rail lines, highways, or roads resulting in less accessibility for transportation
• Loss of business, closed doors means lost commercial cash flow, less rent, and loss of customer traffic
• Port closures in Miami area can affect tourist business, stifling of imported products for sale
• Damage to property including contamination from flood watercontaining contaminants to sewage backup

How To Save On Flood Damage Restoration. Have a flood insurance program. Also, by purchasing business interruption insurance, you can gain reimbursement for a claim and lessen the impact of no revenue stream and thus lower your total costs. SERVPRO is recognized as a preferred vendor by many insurance and management companies. We can help speed the process of water damage restoration. The best way to reduce or prevent damages generated by storm surges is to implement strategies before the onset of hurricane season. Here are some strategies you should implement:
• Build higher. If you own your commercial building, consider the value of finding the property's base flood elevation and building above it. Hire a structural engineer to offer a plan to reinforce your commercial property.
• Place valuables higher. If your building contains more than one floor, be sure to move valuable assets, technical equipment, and computers to the second floor.
• Invest in preventative installations. Be sure to install some back-flow valves in the property's sewer lines. These valves will prevent city sewage from flowing into your property in the event of a storm surge. Have available access to water surge barricading materials such as sandbags. Also, be sure to elevate electrical systems such as extension cords above the region's flood level. You can also utilize cinder blocks to raise your appliances and most valuable assets above anticipated flood levels.
• Select fast-drying material. Carpeting and wet drywall are susceptible to damage from mold. These porous-surfaced building materials normally require discarding after flooding due to contaminants and mold growth. Build or replace with stone products, tile and noncardboard backed gypsum materials.
• Purchase hurricane shutters.

Call SERVPRO Now! To ensure that your Miami commercial property can withstand water damage resulting from floods, be sure to implement the strategies outlined above. Post flooding, the most urgent action is to extract the standing water from the premises. Our company has the equipment, training, and expertise to dry out your building, repair material damage, clean, and sanitize your business. Our IICRC-certified professionals are skilled in thoroughly restoring your property to its previous safe, sanitary condition. "Like it never even happened." Let's get you open for business.

Flood Damage-What to Do?

8/1/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Provides Quick Water Removal to Your Storm Damaged Property

SERVPRO Provides Total Support to Restore Your Storm Damaged Dwelling

Following the experience of enduring the disaster that a hurricane, flood or fire causes, it is very apparent that much flood damage restoration lies ahead. After such a tragedy, the water removal, clean up process, and restoration to the pre-loss condition can feel like a very overwhelming task at hand, but needing immediate attention.

The aftermath of any storm event will encompass many aspects before there can be a return to normalcy. The most important initial factor is safety for you, your family, and the structure of your home. Note that you must not return to your home until the local authorities have advised you that it is safe. The range of storm damage to your home and your neighborhood will be the determining factors.

You should take the time to contact your home insurance provider as quickly as you can after the occurrence of the disaster that has affected your home unexpectedly. The insurance provider will then start your claim and send out an insurance adjuster since there is extensive damage. Make sure that you establish your coverage with your agent as some flood damage costs may need a separate policy. He/She can provide you with further assisted guidance by recommending a professional disaster recovery company like SERVPRO to begin the storm damaged restoration of your home. This national company, with local franchises, is listed as a preferred vendor to over 315 insurance and property management companies.

The initial 48 hours is crucial for mitigating water damage. SERVPRO can begin by boarding up any exposed areas to the outside elements. This will also lessen the chances of continuing damage or vandalism. The team can tarp roofs, and even construct temporary fencing around your property. All power must be disconnected to lessen the chance of electrocution or fires. Heavy duty truck mounted water pumps will void the structure of most of the standing water. Wet vacs, sump pumps, continue the water extraction process. Moisture removal is vital to mitigate secondary water damage to possessions, building materials, and mold growth. Air movers, dehumidifiers, and portable generators are available to continue this process.

SERVPRO will provide a CCIS report that inventories all water damaged items, and articles. We can pack-out possessions to be dried, cleaned, and sanitized at our cleaning facility. This report will help in your insurance claim for restitution and restoration of your water damaged dwelling. We will complete the storm damage project by taking you on a walk-through of your property, supplying documentation of normal levels of moisture remaining, and guaranteeing your complete satisfaction. You can return home "Like it never even happened."

Power Outages

"Power outages can occur because of multiple reasons: utility blackouts or severe weather such as thunder and lightning storms, snow and ice storms, or strong winds. Whatever the reason, power outages can affect thousands – even millions – of people over an extended period of time.

In preparation for a power outage or any emergency, every household should have a disaster supply kit that contains key items such as non-perishable food, drinking water, a battery-operated radio or television, a land-line telephone or cell phone, and an emergency contact list of relatives or friends. To view checklists for home emergency preparedness kits, click here.

Extended power outages during extremely hot or extremely cold weather are serious concerns for individuals with special needs or for those who rely on life support devices requiring electricity, such as respirators or ventilators.

By law, utility companies are required to maintain and update their lists, annually, of customers who rely on life support devices. People with these medical concerns need to register with their utility company or complete an application to get on their lists. Written verification from the customer’s physician may also need to be included. People with medical concerns should contact their utility companies for details.

However, there is no guarantee that customers with medical needs will have their power restored immediately. People who rely on medical equipment need to be extra prepared. Their emergency preparedness kit should include a list of places to go until power is restored, additional oxygen tanks, and if possible, a backup generator as an alternate power source.

Before a Power Outage

To prepare for a blackout or power outage, you should do the following.
  • To begin preparing, you should update or build an emergency kit (see above) and make a family communications plan http://www.ready.gov/family-communications.
  • Follow energy conservation measures to keep the use of electricity as low as possible, which can help power companies avoid imposing rolling blackouts.
  • Fill plastic containers with water and place them in the refrigerator and freezer, if there’s room. Leave about an inch of space inside each one, because water expands as it freezes. This chilled or frozen water will help keep food cold during a temporary power outage.
  • Be aware that most medication that requires refrigeration can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist.
  • Keep your gas tank in your vehicle at least half full because gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.
  • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage opener is located and know how to operate it. Garage doors can be heavy, so know that you may need help to lift it.
  • Keep a key to your house with you if you regularly use the garage as the primary means of entering your home, in case the garage door will not open.

During a Power Outage

  • Use only flashlights for emergency lighting. NEVER use candles during a blackout or power outage. Candles pose an extreme risk of fire.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep your food as fresh as possible. Carefully check your food for signs of spoilage before eating.
  • Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment (like air conditioners) or electronics that were in use when the power went out. Power many return with momentary “surges” or “spikes” that can damage computers, as well as motors in appliances, like the air conditioner, refrigerator, washer or furnace.
  • NEVER run a generator inside a home or garage.
  • Do not connect a generator to a home’s electrical system. If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to the outlets on the generator.
  • Listen to a local radio station or to a battery or generator powered television for updated information.
  • Use a standard telephone handset (land line) or cellular phone. Cordless phones and answering machines require electricity. Use the phone for emergencies only.
  • DURING THE SUMMER – Take steps to remain cool, if it’s hot outside. During prolonged power outages, consider going to a place that has power and air conditioning, such as a movie theater, shopping mall, library or “cooling shelter” that may be open in your community.
  • DURING THE WINTER – Put on layers of warm clothing if it’s cold outside. Never burn charcoal indoors for heating or cooking. Never use your gas oven as a source of heat. If the power is out for a prolonged period, plan to go to another location (a relative or friend’s home, or a public facility) that has heat to keep warm.
  • Provide plenty of fresh cool water for your pets.
  • Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion.
  • Try to keep cash on hand. Equipment such as automated teller machines (ATMs) will not work during a power outage or blackout.

People with Disabilities and Other Access & Functional Needs

  • Call your power company before rolling blackouts occur, if you use a battery-operated wheelchair, life-support system (such as oxygen) or other power-dependent equipment. Many utility companies keep a list and map of the locations of power-dependent customers, in case of an emergency.
  • Ask utility companies what alternatives are available in your area. Contact the customer service department of your local utility company(ies) to learn if this service is available in your community.
  • Have an extra battery, if you use a motorized wheelchair or scooter. A car battery also can be used with a wheelchair, but will not last as long as the wheelchair’s deep-cycle battery. If available, have a lightweight manual wheelchair for backup.
  • If you are visually impaired, have a talking or Braille clock, or large-print timepiece with extra batteries.
  • Consider getting a small, portable battery-operated television if you are deaf or have a hearing loss. Emergency broadcasts may give information in open captioning or American Sign Language (ASL)."

Red Cross Tips

7/26/2016 (Permalink)

The Red Cross offers tips and advice for pre and post disasters. The following was copied directly from http://www.redcross.org/find-help/disaster-recovery/utilities-major-systems .

"Electrical, Plumbing and Heating Systems
  • If you see sparks, broken or frayed wires, or if you smell hot insulation, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker.
  • If there is a pool of water on the floor between you and the fuse box or circuit breaker panel, use a dry wooden stick to try to reach to turn off the main fuse or breaker, but do not step or stand in water to do that. If you cannot reach the fuse box or breaker panel, call a qualified electrician for assistance.
  • Inspect the panel box for any breakers that may have tripped. A tripped breaker may indicate damaged wiring inside your home. Do not turn them on. Call an electrician.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect fuses. Replace broken fuses with exactly the same amperage rating and never use an object such as a coin or strip of metal to bypass the protection that fuses provide.
  • If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using sinks, showers or toilets and call a plumber.
  • If water pipes are damaged, turn off the water at the main valve. Call a plumber for assistance.
  • If you have a heating oil tank system, turn off all valves and contact a professional specializing in maintenance of such equipment before using it again.
Telephones
  • Check each telephone to see if it is still on the hook. Hang up any phones that aren’t. Wait a few minutes, and then pick up one phone to listen for a dial tone to know whether you have working telephone service.
  • If you don’t have a dial tone, try unplugging all the phones. Plug in one at a time and listen for dial tone. This will help you determine if the phone itself is broken or the service is completely out. If it is, contact the telephone company to report the problem and request repair."
